In our previous blogs, we outlined the need, in our chaotic world of unknowns, to reclaim our focus and attention and take charge of our own minds. By reclaiming these, and enhancing self-awareness we have a deeper understanding of the sources of our anxiety and distractions.  How to self-manage and self-regulate them through developing deliberate calm. To effectively create consciousness, and a safe space that potentially transforms the power of our minds and hearts to connect with others, cultivate well-being, harness people’s collective genius, and generate our resilience, through thinking about creativity differently.

Transforming fear and alarm

This mobilizes the energy our fears, anxiety, and alarm provide to transform the power of our minds and develop physical and psychological well-being. We can then apply proven neuroscience principles and coaching practices to cultivate resilience and think about creativity differently.

Transforming our fears and alarm in this way increases our resilience in responding to events in real-time, anticipating future events, and processing learning’s post events. It also enhances our well-being and creativity to enable us to be courageous and compassionate when inventing and innovating in an uncertain and constantly changing environment.

The potential outcomes include people experiencing more positive emotions, increased engagement at work, increased development of positive relationships, and more meaningful and purposeful work. In the latest report, by Udemy on “Workplace Learning Trends” they compare data collected from Australian workers (human capital) in early September 2022 with previous surveys in November 2019, August 2020, and May 2021.

They discovered three surprising truths about well-being, including:

  • Workers’ resilience levels are waning. More than two-thirds of workers (68.5%) felt like they were burning out at work. This is impacting workers’ levels of performance, job satisfaction, and commitment.

It starts with initiating a habit of pausing long enough to take deep breaths, retreat, reflect, and access these inner parts of ourselves; including noticing our emotions, identifying our triggers, observing our physical reactions to normalize our equilibrium, coherence, and calmness, and focusing on thinking about creativity differently.

Re-appraising our situation

We can then reappraise what is really going on, by identifying what our emotions are telling us, sustaining the most resourceful emotions and letting negative ones go, and finally, by identifying the key options for taking positive actions. Ultimately take smarter risks, make smarter decisions, and take more intelligent actions that cultivate our well-being, develop our resilience, unleash creativity differently, and satisfy our desire for meaning, purpose, and accomplishment.

  • Our unconscious mind, through our brains’ default mode network (DMN), is freed to wander, and be spontaneous in emerging and generating novel and surprising ideas and patterns.

This is usually achieved by regularly practicing a range of very simple activities that help us get centered, including removing any distractions (mobile phones), deep breathing (box breathing), and slow grounding repetitive exercises such as Feldenkrais.

  • Being mindful: involves focusing our conscious attention on the present moment, our physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions in an accepting, nonjudgmental, and discerning way. It involves training our unconscious minds to notice, focus and pay deep attention to what is really going on, for ourselves, for others, and in the system, we are operating within.
  • Our conscious minds are now provided with the focus necessary for guided problem-solving and for identifying the actions required to deliver the desired outcomes.

This is usually achieved by simple activities, by directing your focus when walking during the day (in nature without headsets), yoga, swimming, golf, tennis, listening to music, cooking, or by simple mindful meditation practices.

  • Being conscious: involves being in the present moment, or fully in the “here and now,” and means that we are grounded, fully aware, and mindful of what is happening at every moment because we are now consciously aware and able to shift our minds and generate creative thinking strategies.
  • Our conscious minds are able to exploit possibilities and make sense of the ideas that surface in the mind-wandering phase, by accessing the salience network, which then recruits the executive control networks, in our brains to refine and develop an idea. We can then exploit the range of creative ideas to make unexpected connections and to emerge, diverge and converge novel ideas for thinking about creativity differently, as well as for smart risk-taking, decision-making, and innovative problem-solving.

Creating a safe space, to transform the power of our minds and hearts to connect with others cultivates our well-being, harnesses peoples’ collective genius, generates resilience, and unleashes creativity by thinking about creativity differently.

WILL.I.AM and Honeywell have collaborated to bring the Xupermask to market.

What is the Xupermask?

It’s probably easiest to describe the Xupermask as equal parts: health & safety equipment, personal electronics, and fashion statement.

At its heart the Xupermask is a human-centered design intended to empower the user to feel both safe AND productive. It addresses the following set of user needs that are mostly unmet by traditional mask options:

1. Fits well to the face so escaping air doesn’t fog up your glasses
2. Fit also better prevents unsafe air from entering
3. Fans improve the ease of respiration
4. HEPA filters improve air quality
5. Built-in microphone for easier and safer phone calls
6. Built-in Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones for phone and entertainment

For me, the Xupermask seems like overkill for many day to day situations.

But, when I think about getting on public transport every day or flying on a commercial airline cross-country or across an ocean, the idea of having a Xupermask to wear becomes quite appealing.

And for those of us in the western United States, this could come in quite handy during forest fire season – just saying.

Welcome to the future. We have reached a point of saturation where wearable technology is no longer a novelty; it is an extension of our biological selves. Most of us are adorned with rings, watches, patches, or smart textiles that continuously stream biometric data to the cloud. We have successfully turned the human body into an emitter of massive amounts of data. But we must pause and ask the difficult question: Has this deluge of data actually resulted in a healthier, happier populace?

The answer is complicated. We have fallen into a classic Efficiency Trap in the wellness sector. We have become incredibly efficient at capturing heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels, and sleep staging, but we have often failed at the human-centered aspect of interpreting what that data means for daily life. True innovation in this space is no longer about better sensors or longer battery life; innovation is change with impact. In health monitoring, impact means shifting behavior and reducing anxiety, not just generating a prettier dashboard.

If we want wearable technology to fulfill its promise, we must pivot from treating humans as machines to be optimized, and instead treat them as complex biological and emotional beings who need context, agency, and empathy.

When technology acts as a stern taskmaster, the human “antibody” response kicks in — we ignore the notifications, or worse, abandon the device entirely because it makes us feel inadequate.

Human-centered innovation requires designing systems that understand why we aren’t moving. Are we stressed? Ill? Overworked? A sensor can detect a lack of steps, but it requires human-centered AI to discern the context and offer a compassionate, actionable suggestion rather than a generic demand to “stand up.”

The market winners in 2026 are those who recognized that raw data, without human context, is a liability. Here are two examples of organizations that shifted the paradigm.

Case Study 1: The Paradigm Shift from “Activity” to “Recovery” (Whoop & Oura)

In the early 2020s, a significant shift occurred in the athletic and wellness communities, led by companies like Whoop and Oura. The previous generation of wearables gloried in the “hustle” — 10,000 steps, closing rings, pushing harder. This often led to burnout and injury.

These innovators realized that the missing piece of the human performance puzzle wasn’t exertion; it was rest. They reframed health monitoring around “Recovery” and “Readiness” scores. By using data (HRV, resting heart rate, sleep temperature) to tell a user, “Your body needs rest today, do not push hard,” they provided permission for self-care. This was a profound psychological shift. It changed the user relationship from serving the device’s demands for activity to the device serving the user’s need for balance. Oura, for example, utilized its precise temperature sensors to partner with Natural Cycles, allowing for FDA-cleared birth control capabilities via a wearable ring. Furthermore, they began contextualizing other metrics — why sleep quality might dip or respiratory rate might rise — based on hormonal phases. By acknowledging and designing for these distinct biological realities, they didn’t just add a feature; they validated the lived experiences of millions of women, creating deep product loyalty and genuine wellness outcomes that generic algorithms never could.

The Future: Agentic Health and Invisible Tech

Looking ahead, the next frontier of human-centered wellness tech will focus on invisibility and agency. We are moving toward “agentic AI” in health — systems that don’t just report data but can, with our permission, take micro-actions on our behalf. Imagine your wearable detecting rising stress levels and automatically adjusting your smart home lighting to a calming hue, or rescheduling a low-priority meeting on your calendar to create breathing room.

However, the success of these future systems rests entirely on trust. To overcome the natural resistance to having tech intervene in our lives, these systems must prove they are acting in our best interests, prioritizing our well-being over engagement metrics. The technology must fade into the background so that life can come to the foreground.

Frequently Asked Questions on Wearable Wellness

Isn’t having constant health data making people more anxious rather than healthier?

It certainly can if the data is presented without context. This is what I call the “Efficiency Trap” of data collection. Human-centered innovation means moving away from raw numbers that induce anxiety (orthosomnia) and toward synthesized insights that give users a sense of control and agency over their outcomes.

How do we ensure privacy as wearables collect increasingly intimate biological data?

Privacy is the foundational trust requirement for future adoption. We must move beyond simple consent forms toward “sovereign data” models, where the individual owns their biometric data absolutely and grants temporary, revocable access to service providers, rather than the device manufacturer owning the data by default.

What is the biggest mistake companies make when designing wellness wearables?

They forget that health is a behavior change problem, not a technology problem. They build excellent sensors but terrible change management tools. They rely on nagging and generic goals instead of empathy, personalization, and an understanding of the psychological barriers to adopting healthier habits.

Will Health Sensors Make iWatch the Must Have Wearable?

iWatch Concept with Health SensorsBack in the 1990’s NBC referred to Thursday night as must watch television, and when it comes to making the transformation from invention to innovation, an innovation often needs a ‘Must Have’ feature.

So, with rumors swirling about the potential introduction today of an Apple iWatch, will Health Sensors make the iWatch a ‘Must Have’ or a ‘Must Wear’?

Will the iWatch do to the Fitbit and Nike Fuelband what the iPhone did to the Flip video camera?

If so, it will be yet another example of how it is more important to build a product or service that moves people. Move them not in a spiritual way (although creating something akin to a spiritual experience can help), but in an emotional way where the product or service (through value creation, value access, and value translation) provides enough ‘Must Have’ (or at least ‘Must Try’) to move people to abandon their existing solution (even if it is the ‘Do Nothing’ solution) to try and ultimately adopt your new solution in large numbers.

Moving people in this way is what moves your product or service from being an invention, to being an innovation.

Will the purported ten sensors of the iWatch provide enough entertainment, functionality, and actionable information to make the iWatch a ‘Must Wear’, make it a device that you won’t want to take it off?

If Apple can pull that off, then they will have a huge hit on their hands.

Are they too early like Samsung?

Have they seeded an ecosystem to grow after the launch of the iWatch?

After all it was the ecosystem created around the App Store that turned the iPhone into the market leader, it was the ecosystem created around the iTunes Store (and a Windows version of the software to access it) that turned the iPod into the market leader.

Or is it too early for Apple to launch an iWatch?

What ten sensors would make an iWatch a ‘Must Wear’?

  1. Accelerometer
  2. Pulse monitor
  3. NFC
  4. Blood pressure monitor?
  5. Temperature sensor?
