Zoom Tutorial – Amazing New PowerPoint Background Feature

EPISODE SIX – Ask the Consultant

Today in EPISODE SIX of Ask the Consultant, host Braden Kelley shows you how to take advantage of an amazing new Zoom feature that lets you easily create compelling videos with PowerPoint slides over your shoulder in the background.

This is a way better method of presenting slides than having your camera on and sharing your screen.

This video is itself an example of what you can do with this new Zoom feature (currently in BETA) and inside I’ll show you step by step how to do it.

This zoom tutorial will help all of the following people be more efficient and effective:

It shows how to simply do what previously took third-party apps like mmhmm or post-production video editing knowledge and lots of time to achieve. It’s so easy that I can finally get around to recording Change Planning Toolkit™ eLearning and certification programs.

Quick Reminder of Steps to Create Over the Shoulder Slides in Zoom

PART ONE:

  1. Create a new PowerPoint (13.33” x 7.5” works well)
  2. Choose a Background for your Zoom slides
  3. Fill default wide-screen format of all slides
  4. Copy slide from source presentation and paste it as an image onto one of your new background slides
  5. Resize pasted slide image to be 9.5” wide
  6. Position slide image upper right with ¼” border
  7. Repeat

PART TWO:

  1. Open Zoom
  2. Start a Meeting
  3. Click the Start Video icon (ALT + V)
  4. Click the Screen Sharing icon (ALT + S)
  5. Click the Advanced tab
  6. Click on ‘PowerPoint as Virtual Background’
  7. Select Your PowerPoint to import as a background

Picking a Problem Worth Solving From a Sea of Problems

In the current environment, human-centric challenges abound, but you can’t focus on solving all of them. Many organizations complain not about having too few ideas, but about having TOO MANY IDEAS. Human-centered design principles can be incredibly helpful to assist with empathy, problem framing, problem re-framing, solutioning, prototyping, hypothesis testing, experimentation, and iteration. All of which can help you narrow down onto a few problems worth solving.

Preparing to Solve the Right Problem

I’d like to share with you here the recording of the keynote I delivered on 9 June 2020 at the virtual ISPIM Innovation Conference titled Picking a Problem Worth Solving From a Sea of Problems:

Because there are not a lot of great tools for Human-Centered Design (aka Design Thinking) I’ve been putting together some tools to make the approach a little more intuitive. I’ve either built, or am in the process of building tools for:

Inexpensive Tool for Finding Problems Worth Solving

Problem Finding CanvasThe Problem Finding Canvas is intended to help you think deeply about the different areas to explore that you could address, the challenges that make up each of those areas to explore and the opportunities for innovation or improvement that exist in solving those challenges.

Key Focus Areas

The middle of the canvas is designed to help clients uncover more than just the obvious challenges, so be sure and dig deep into the details of the:

  • Users
  • Outcomes
  • Tools
  • Actions/Interactions

Desired Outcome

The Problem Finding Canvas should help you investigate a handful of areas to explore, choose the one most important to you, extract all of the potential challenges and opportunities and choose one to prioritize.

Too much of the time the innovation conversation focuses on whether someone is innovative or not. We waste far too much time focusing on how people can become more innovative instead of stopping to think about the possibility that everyone is innovative in their own way.

The lone innovator myth needs to die.

A Creative Marriage Proposal

I found this video via @MeghanMBiro and @berget and I just had to share it.

It’s a wedding proposal from an actor in my hometown to his now bride to be, and is a great example of re-imagining a traditional activity in our society – the marriage proposal.

The things I love about it are not the actual creative execution but the principles exemplified by the experience:

  1. If you have a great product or service, people will be willing to help you sell it
  2. If it’s really good, they may go out of their way to help you sell it – or even do so without asking your permission
  3. Oregon fosters creativity 😉
  4. Focus on more than the transaction – Make magic!
  5. Skills can from other contexts can be valuable to the current challenge
  6. Have fun with everything you do and you’ll have better results 🙂
  7. Don’t just ask people to help, make it fun to help
  8. Give people something to talk about and feel the love spread 🙂
  9. Even if your customers or community do the sales pitch – YOU’VE GOT TO CLOSE

Should I run for President again in 2012?My presidential campaign picked up a lot of steam in 2008, but of course I came up short.

Should I make another run for the presidency in 2012?

If you didn’t know I was a front-running presidential candidate in 2008, check out the video:

Of course I am kidding, but I was rifling some through old posts and I came across this video. This campaign was one of my favorite pass along marketing campaigns of 2008. It allows you to embed your name or a friend’s name visually in the video in several spots and send the video to them. I thought it was a lot of fun, and probably money much better spent than if they had bought a commercial on the Super Bowl.
